Why do water heaters fail so early in Tooele?
Hard water, and Tooele Valley runs on groundwater rather than canyon snowmelt. Scale settles at the bottom of the tank and insulates the burner from the water it is meant to be heating, so the burner runs longer and hotter for the same result. That is the rumbling noise, that is the gas bill, and that is why tanks here routinely fall short of their rated life. Flushing helps. A softener helps more and protects the fixtures, the dishwasher and the washing machine at the same time.
Do you actually come out to Tooele?
Yes — about forty-five minutes west of the shop in Sandy, over the pass and south on SR-36. It is the western edge of the area we cover. Same day depends on the schedule, and we will tell you on the phone rather than leave you waiting.
Is a water softener worth the money?
In this valley it is one of the few plumbing purchases that pays back a real part of itself. It does not only save the water heater: mineral scale narrows pipes, coats fixtures and shortens the life of every water-using appliance in the house, and it makes soap and detergent do less work. The honest caveat is that it is a system to maintain, not a thing you fit and forget.
Does the altitude affect furnace sizing here?
Yes. At about 5,050 feet gas equipment loses roughly twelve percent of its rated input, so a furnace with 100,000 BTU on the plate delivers closer to 88,000. Combine that with cold clear nights and a wide day-to-night swing and Tooele becomes a place where a system sized by copying the old one gets found out in the first real cold snap.

Being west of the Oquirrhs means drier air, hotter afternoons in summer and a sharper drop overnight. Wide swings are hard on equipment that cycles a lot, and they are why evaporative cooling worked well here for a long time and still does in some houses. They also mean a system sized on an average rather than on the extremes will disappoint at both ends of the year.
Old core, new edges
Tooele has a historic centre with genuinely old housing and a large amount of development from the 2000s onward around it. The old side has retrofitted ducting and original service lines; the new side has tight envelopes, condensing furnaces and condensate drains. Both are forty-five minutes from us and neither gets a template answer.
